Court Denies Bail for Trailer Driver

Prosecution Highlights Unremorseful Behavior

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The driver of a trailer involved in a fatal accident that killed a 21-year-old woman has been denied bail, with the prosecution citing his lack of regret as a key factor.

Prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan highlighted Marhizan Johari’s behavior in court, where he allegedly made a “peace” sign, as evidence of his unremorseful attitude.

Public Interest Influences Decision

The case, which garnered widespread attention on social media, prompted the magistrate to reject bail despite the offence being bailable. Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan postponed the case to Jan 24, awaiting postmortem, chemist, and Puspakom reports.

Defendant Faces Serious Penalties

Marhizan pleaded not guilty to reckless driving along Jalan Kebun Sireh on Nov 13. If convicted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he faces substantial penalties, including imprisonment and fines.

Community Mourns Victim’s Loss

The victim, clerk Lee Zi Rou, was killed when a cargo container crushed her car. A second motorist, Tan Chou Theng, was seriously injured but survived thanks to passers-by. Lee’s funeral drew hundreds of mourners.
